The Power of Community in the Lash Industry

The Power of Community in the Lash Industry

I started out in this industry feeling completely alone. I worked at a day spa, I was 18 years old in Anchorage, Alaska. I had no social media to make any lash friends. I had coworkers that kept to themselves and there were no lash artists in the area that were open to helping each other. I was in a smaller city, feeling very alone and overwhelmingly scared of judgement as a newer lash artist. My work wasn't very good yet either. I was still shy and finding my voice and I wish I could go back in time and give my younger self the biggest hug. She would never believe that we built a business...and then a salon suites...and then a lash COMPANY that became the most special and kind community in the entire industry.

There’s something profoundly beautiful about seeing a fellow artist succeed. While the lash industry can sometimes feel competitive, it’s also filled with opportunities for genuine connection, shared learning, and mutual support. In many ways, we are stronger together than we are on our own. When we make an effort to build each other up, something magical happens: our entire community flourishes, our collective skills improve, and our clients ultimately receive the best possible service. We NEED community to thrive.

Lash artistry, like any creative field, demands constant growth. Techniques evolve, trends shift, and best practices emerge as time goes on. By sharing knowledge—whether it’s about a new adhesive, a cutting-edge map, or a solution for a common retention issue—we not only advance our individual craftsmanship but also elevate the profession as a whole. When one lash artist refines a method or figures out something new, we all benefit if they choose to share their insights. It’s a ripple effect: you help one colleague, that colleague helps another, and soon, the entire lash landscape feels the impact of your generosity.

We can’t underestimate the sense of belonging that comes from forging genuine relationships in this industry. Attending workshops, meeting up at trade shows, and even having casual coffee chats with local lash artists create spaces where we can learn from one another’s mistakes and celebrate each other’s wins. That's one of the reasons we built a coffee shop inside our salon suites. It's home to so many service providers craving friendships and I see other lash artists meeting for coffee dates all the time. It fills my heart like you wouldn't believe.

Instead of viewing every fellow artist as competition, imagine them as potential collaborators or mentors. A quick message to praise someone’s latest lash set on social media, or a thoughtful comment on how beautifully they styled a particular eye shape, might spark a new friendship. Those small gestures help us all feel seen, appreciated, and part of something bigger than ourselves.

On the days when we feel exhausted or uncertain, knowing there’s a support system of lash artists who understand the intricacies of our craft can be immensely reassuring. Sharing stories about difficult clients, trade secrets about building a loyal clientele, or even tips for preventing burnout can make the journey less daunting. When we let go of the idea that every person in our field is “the competition,” we open up room for empathy, compassion, and camaraderie. It’s amazing how feeling connected can reignite our passion and remind us why we chose this creative profession in the first place.

Let’s also remember the power of mentorship. Many of us can recall a mentor—or at least someone we looked up to—who offered a guiding word at the right time. Whether you’re new to lashing or a seasoned professional, there’s always a way to nurture someone’s potential. Teaching a new technique, giving constructive criticism, or just encouraging an emerging artist to keep pushing past a plateau can make a lasting impact. Often, the simple act of believing in someone else helps them believe in themselves.
