Is it trashy to talk numbers? I don't think so. I think transparency is SO important. Share this blog with your judgemental aunt that thinks lashing isn't a real career. ;)
Estimating how much independent (self-employed) lash artists make on average worldwide is tricky because of the huge variation in factors like location, skill level, competition, and overhead costs. However, we can look at some broad figures and common scenarios to get a general idea. Below is a breakdown of typical earning ranges, plus the main variables that affect an independent lash artist’s income.
Estimated Worldwide Earnings
-
Global “Average” Starting Range: ~$20,000–$30,000 (USD) per year
- This might apply to newer lash artists working part-time or still building a client base.
-
More Experienced & Established Range: ~$35,000–$70,000 (USD) per year
- Lash artists with a solid clientele, decent marketing, and enough bookings can often reach or exceed this bracket.
-
High-End or Luxury Lash Artists: $80,000–$180,000+ (USD) per year
- Skilled artists who consistently book premium services, market effectively, and sometimes even offer training or additional retail products (like lash serums, shampoos, etc.) can reach six figures.
It is not impossible to make a GREAT income as a lash artist. It is an investment of time and you need to be offering an extremely valuable service to your clients to reach this point.
These artists have great retention, they love serving their clients and building solid lasting relationships and they value the client experience. It's not just a quick service.
Keep in mind these are very rough estimates. The cost of living, local demand, and competition can push these numbers up or down significantly.
When I first started as a new lash artist at a small local day spa, I made about 40k my first year, being fully booked making 30% commision. This was in 2016.
My first year being an independent lash artist that heavily prioritized customer experience, retention and customized looks, I made $150k. This was in 2017 in Alaska.
